Wiesbaden has licensed gaming since 1771. Fyodor Dostoevsky lost heavily at the tables here in 1865 and drew on the experience for The Gambler. The rooms closed under the 1872 Prussian prohibition and reopened in 1949, and the Spielbank has occupied the Kurhaus, completed in 1907 to Friedrich von Thiersch's design, ever since. Hotel Nassauer Hof opened in 1813 and has stood opposite the Kurhaus through both periods.
